Make the Most of the Hay Day With This Pre-season Inspection Checklist


 There is an old saying, "Make Hay While the Sun Shines" which has been around for hundreds of years. It means to take advantage of the chance to do something while conditions are still good. Since hay gets destroyed if it gets too wet, the farmers used to take the opportunity when the weather was hot and sunny to cut and gather the hay. Therefore, making hay while the sun shines began as a sensible and practical piece of farming advice. Since hay gets damaged if it gets excessively wet, farmers used to take advantage of the sunny and hot weather to cut and gather the hay.


When the hay season is around the corner, farmers pull their machines or combine out in order to start work. It is advised to inspect your machine thoroughly 2-3 weeks before the start of the season. 1. Start with inspecting the tires of your machine as you won’t be able to move your tractor without functioning tires. Inspect the pressure in all four tires and ensure that tires are in good condition.

2. Next, inspect the functioning of the belt and chain on your hay baler to ensure that these components are working smoothly. Also, lubricate well all the chains and those spots where lubrication is needed to ensure the smooth functioning of the machine.

3. The toolbox present in your machine contains some important tools required for harvesting. Make sure to check your toolbox and all of them are in working condition. Also, check that your toolbox has all the tools that you may require in the field to avoid any hassle. Also, keep some spare parts handy with you such as cutter blades, extra wrap, or wine, so you won’t have to run during the season to get one when you need it.

4. Next, inspect your machine’s gearbox fluid levels. Adding fresh fluids in the season can make your machine run smoothly and more productive.


5. Check all the belts, wires and cables, cracks, damages, and worn-out parts and consider replacing or repairing them before the start of the season. The thumb rule is that you should replace or repair anything which is cracking or damaged inside your machine on priority getting into the field.

6. Lastly, ensure all the chains, belts; lug bolts are tightened as required as the machine model to avoid any possible issues.  

Get your machine the field 2-3 days before the hay day and start your machine for a few minutes to get it warmed up. You might be spending some time initially in making minor changes and in maintenance. But these things will eventually help you run your machine smoothly and will keep you more productive in the field. Also, by doing a pre-season inspection before the hay season will actually help you achieve a hassle free and profitable season.
